A magnificent and large pair of fine Japanese Foo Lions. This Mid Century pair are hand painted with gold over fine white porcelain, highlighted throughout with raised pale blue and crystal white floral enamel work, quite intricate work and carefully executed. Both have magnificent and proud tails. Symbols of justice and peace, loyal guardians of the Emperors or Princes' palaces in Japan & China these are an excellent example of such. These two males have their paws resting on the pierced red Satsuma balls which symbolise domain over the world. This pair would make a strong visual impact in any room. Age:- Mid 20th.
