In the late 18th century this technique was used to imitate classical sculpture on walls, panels and ceiling decorations. Among glass painters, grisaille is the name of a gray, vitreous pigment used in the art of colouring glass. In French, grisaille has also come to mean any painting technique in which translucent oil colours are laid over a monotone underpainting.
In the grisaille enamel painting technique, pulverized white vitreous enamel is made into a paste for decorative uses.
