Chinese chairs of this period are available - however, these seen here are rare and very very unusual.
Classical Chinese (Shanghai) open armchairs with matching side table. Both chairs have grey and white Dali marble/Dreamstone panels inset into the back panel (as well as the front seat rail), held in place with tiny metal clips. The table has an inset Dali marble top with four additional insets on each side of the apron. These panels alone are valuable as they were chosen by stone masters specifically to reflect the Chinese landscape, misty mountains and water.
The design of the chairs is known as 'Stag Horn'. The three pieces are all wood construction - no nails were used. The wood is Hongmu or Blackwood, superior to regular Rosewood and the finish is the original, and they are heavy. These were made late 19th - early 20th Century and were purchased in Hong Kong 35 years ago from a collector. They are comfortable with a good seat height. Such items were used originally in the formal reception rooms of the wealthy Chinese. These sets are increasingly sought after. We will consider all offers carefully.
