Share
A large and very unusual container made from an amazing piece of tree trunk - from the islands of Indonesia. The cylindrical container depicts the story of Ramayana around the body, (see below) the carving is three dimensional - have a look at the photographs to appreciate the amount of work in this piece.
The top depicts the tree of life - and rests of a fluted rim, the same as the base.
This piece can be used as an ice bucket by putting a glass or metal container inside, a storage container, or a decorative item. It is a lovely item that would have taken a skilled artisan many weeks to carve by hand.
The Story: The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic which follows Prince Rama's quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana with the help of an army of monkeys. It is traditionally attributed to the authorship of the sage Valmiki and dated to around 500 BCE to 100 BCE.
