From the famous series Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji by Utagawa Hiroshige - The Sea Off Satta Pass in Suruga Province, no. 23. Majestic crashing waves in the foreground with tiny boats in the distance under Mount Fuji.
The finest design from the set. The spume of a wave was thought to transmogrify into chidori (a species of plover) which can be seen here flying above the sea. Originally published by Tsutaya Kichizo, 1858. Very good impression, colour and condition. Signed Hiroshige. Vertical print on Washi paper. Good bleed through & desired baren marks.
These smaller post card size/mini prints were made after WWll in Japan for locals and foreigners alike, as a momento of their visit. The detail is incredible and the artist allows us a look back in time via these little portals of artwork. Wood block is an very time consuming and exacting art. Very collectable now.
Dimensions: H5.5", W3.5". Condition - very good.
