Gorgeous Nonya / Straits Chinese porcelain ginger jar with striking turquoise glaze background painted with rich, colorful enamels.
The front and back with bordered vignettes over a white glaze background portraying a green bird perched amongst flowering branches. The body with flowers and scroll design over a rich turquoise glaze. At the top of the body is a light pink and yellow Ruyi border and a yellow, pink and blue greek key border at the neck. At the foot rim is a traditional geometric pink and yellow border.
The cover is decorated in a similar manner as the body. Auspicious double gourds and pink and white lotus flowers feature in the deceptive panels & body.
The Nyonya Straits Chinese people originally came from China and settled in Singapore around the 1500's bringing their own culture with them. The Peranakans are also sometimes referred to as the Straits Chinese or Straits-born Chinese. These pieces are now getting harder to find as they are collected.
