The photographs do not do this amazing and large piece justice - a snarling tiger hand crafted from a single piece of wood - nearly 2 feet long. Intricate carving and hand painted stripes, the attention to detail from the Japanese artisans is outstanding. Sheer power exudes from the tiger, from the poise/stance, the snarling and the eyes.
The carved okimono tiger has its' original beautiful glass eyes.
The underside is with the artists signature incised in a small raised plaque carved into the original wood.
Age is late 19th to early 20th century (Circa 1900 Meiji period)
Condition is remarkably good for the age. Very minor expected surface wear in places and a typical very minor checking crack in rear right hind quarter.
A truely magnificent and collectable beast.
