A classic Savonarola design armchair with exceptional wood carving including the back panel with Northwind face complete with articulated horns, carved gargoyles heads and hoofed feet.  Original finish, and sometimes the North Wind Face is known as the Green Man. This chair has a rather pleasing example of the facial expression associated with this character.
This ticks all the right boxes and will suit many an interior whether traditional or modern - see photographs.
Retains makers label on underside as shown.
Late 19th Century.

Stomps Bukhardt Company produced some of fine examples of this style of furniture from the late 19th century onwards. The company was founded in 1859 by Gustave Stomps and his brother Joseph. There were various names. G. Stomps & Brother was later changed to Stomps-Burkhardt Company in 1890.
